Historic Seattle's Role:
Originally built as low-income Victorian era speculative housing four of the houses were slated for demolition. Historic Seattle purchased three of the residences and obtained a facade on the fourth. Project architect, Gary assisted with the extensive exterior restoration and complete interior renovation. Although this type of housing was once common in Seattle, remodeling and demolition in the high density Central Area has made these wood frame Victorian era row houses a unique example of Seattle's earlier streetscape.
Current and Future Uses:
The houses are owned by private individuals; Historic Seattle owns facade easements on all four of the properties. The 23rd Avenue Houses gained Official City of Seattle Landmark status on December 24, 1979 (Ord#1087321).
