A case study of the Cambridge ApartmentsInterUrban_LogoInCircle_Purple

With Seattle’s real estate market continuing to soar and the City attempting to accommodate an influx of new residents, affordable housing is certainly a hot topic these days.

With new developments popping up everywhere, what affordable housing options even exist?

In fact, by “using what we’ve got,” we can create affordable housing in our existing building stock, including cool historic apartment buildings.

Join Historic Seattle and Bellwether Housing to learn about affordable housing and historic preservation, using Bellwether’s Cambridge Apartments as a case study.

Built in 1923, the Classical Revival style apartment building is situated at the corner of Union Street and 9th Avenue in the First Hill neighborhood. The ten-story brick building was designed by prominent Seattle architect Sherwood Ford and is his only known multi-family residence in Seattle. The Cambridge is now undergoing a $22 million renovation to continue its use as affordable housing.

Originally designed as an apartment hotel, all rooms were equipped with a small kitchen, bathroom, and Murphy-style hide-a-way beds. The building interior remains relatively untouched and provides a glimpse into early-20th century apartment life.

What to expect:

5:30 PM Networking– enjoy a drink and get to know other participants

6:00 PM Learning Opportunity – hear representatives of each organization discuss the building and project

6:30 PM Tour Time – take a behind-the-scenes look at the apartments, including the main lobby, radio and tea rooms, and stops along the upper floors to view rooms in various stages of construction. You’ll even get a peek at the 10th floor “honeymoon suite.”

Participants include: Kji Kelly, Historic Seattle Executive Director; Richard Loo, Bellwether Director Real Estate Development; Jovan Ludovice, Bellwether Senior Housing Developer, and Andy Phillips and Dean Kralios, SMR Architects. Representatives from RAFN (general contractor) and IL Gross (structural engineer) will also be present.

Cambridge Apartments is a construction site. Please wear appropriate shoes (i.e., closed-toed, no sandals), and be prepared for tight quarters and construction dust.

InterUrban seeks to inspire conversations about achieving more livable communities through historic preservation.
