Arthur Loveless's designs are woven into Seattle’s early growth and remain a distinctive part of neighborhoods across the city, from the Loveless Building on Capitol Hill and the Campbell Building in West Seattle to sororities and fraternities at the University of Washington, Colman Pool, the Arboretum Gatehouse, and numerous private residences for notable Seattle families. Despite this remarkable body of work, no comprehensive record of his designs existed until recently, and unfortunately, several of his buildings have been lost to redevelopment pressures.

About the Author

Susan Shorett's interest in Loveless began from a personal place — she is his great-great niece. What started as a curiosity about her family’s history grew into an extensive research project with her cousin, who shared this passion. Together, they discovered that no formal list of Loveless work had ever been compiled, and so they set out to document it. That documentation led to the publication of the book Arthur Loveless: Celebrating a Seattle Architectural Legacy.

What to Expect

The presentation will explore the inspiration for the Loveless book, highlight both historic and current photographs of Loveless designs, and tell the stories of the people and neighborhoods they shaped.
