New Guidelines on Sustainability and Historic Rehabilitation

The National Park Service (NPS) recently issued its new Illustrated Guidelines on Sustainability for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings. This is an excellent resource to be used with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. The “Standards” are guidelines used throughout the United States by NPS, State Historic Preservation Offices, preservation planners, and local preservation boards and commissions in their review of projects related to the treatment of historic properties. Preservation is an inherently sustainable approach to building. Far too often, historic buildings have been demolished to make way for new “sustainable” buildings. Check out this interesting blog post in Preservation Nation about the new guidelines.
