Historic Seattle’s Annual Preservation Celebration is coming up on September 25, 2025. We’ll celebrate the projects and people that help amplify our mission. Today, we feature the Sunset Hill Community Hall, the 2025 Community Advocacy Award recipient.
Congratulations Sunset Hill Community Hall!
Seattle’s Community Club Movement began in 1901 with a clever act of civic ingenuity. Two North End residents, frustrated by the city’s inaction on a streetlight request, invented a fictional community club. One, a printer, created official-looking letterhead naming himself president and his neighbor secretary. Their formal demand worked—a streetlight was installed within a week. This success sparked the rise of community clubs across Seattle.
Built in Ballard in 1929, the Sunset Hill Community Hall (3003 NW 66th Street) became a vibrant hub for social and civic life. Saturday night dances, card parties, youth programs, and neighborhood meetings filled its calendar. Members championed improvements to roads, parks, and city services, embodying the dual mission of successful community clubs: creating community connection while advocating for change.
Like many organizations, The Hall was deeply impacted by the pandemic. With its regularly scheduled programming suspended, the Hall pivoted to support the community by hosting a multi-family pod school with dedicated volunteers. Still, in the face of declining membership and revenue, they were very relieved when Historic Seattle offered to preserve the building as part of their portfolio of historic properties if needed.
In 2023, Board member Robert Loe, recognizing that the Hall’s rich history was one of its greatest assets, secured a grant from 4Culture to nominate the building as a City of Seattle Landmark. Historian Holly Taylor of Past Forward/Northwest Cultural Services prepared the nomination report, and in March 2025, the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board voted unanimously to designate the Hall as a City Landmark. A jubilant well-attended celebration followed in April.
Today, the Sunset Hill Community Hall is thriving once again, poised to celebrate its centennial in 2029 with renewed vitality and purpose.
Membership has grown, buoyed by the new young families in the neighborhood. The building has been freshly painted, systems upgraded, and a new website now showcases its long history and upcoming events like Family Movie Nights, a monthly Open Mic and Art Makers meetup, a summer BBQ party, a Halloween family party, Art Walks, and a variety of civic presentations. It’s also a venue for music, dance, and yoga classes, theatre and orchestra rehearsals and performances, and a cherished rental space for weddings, reunions, memorials, festivities, and other family gatherings.
We often think of historic preservation as a dramatic rescue or a creative repurposing. But Sunset Hill Community Hall reminds us that preservation is also quiet, steady care—month after month, year after year—as generations of volunteers nurture a place they love.
This Community Advocacy Award recognizes Sunset Hill Community Hall’s efforts to protect its building through landmark designation, securing its future for generations to come.
