Harbor Island, a human-made industrial island in Elliot Bay has been home to many commercial and industrial activities over the past century. In 1911, the Fisher Family constructed a flour mill on the island that operated under the same name until 2001. In 2002, it was purchased by King County and for the next 2 decades existed as a decaying relic of Seattle’s industrial past. Then, in 2021, King County revealed an ambitious plan to convert the complex into a working production studio serving film and television clients. Today, it serves as an excellent example of adaptive reuse as a tool to invigorate the local economy.
